Joey Scouts

Be Prepared… to hop into adventure!

Age Group: (*5-8 years of age)
* Children must have started school to join at 5 years of age. The commencement for advancement in sections may vary up to six months

Do you know how to cook chocolate spiders or make frog puppets? Can you build monsters and spaceships from scrap items? Have you ever grown a plant or hiked in the bush?

These are all things you can learn when you are a Joey Scout!
Joey Scouts are boys and girls aged six and seven who like having fun and making friends!
When you join Joeys you’ll be part of a Mob. You’ll play games, read stories, sing songs and do craft activities.

You’ll find out about nature and learn about native birds and animals.
You might fly a kite, go bushwalking, go to the beach, or visit a fire station, zoo or farm.

The Joey Scout motto is HOP – Help Other People! You’ll learn to jump in and HOP, and to share with your friends.
You’ll also learn heaps of useful stuff, like what to do in an emergency.
When you join in different activities and learn new things, you and your mates in the Mob can earn special badges to sew on to your Joey Scout shirts.

More than anything, Joey Scouts is about having fun! Every activity is designed to ensure that the Joey Scout goes home happy and fulfilled from their time as part of the Mob.

Joeys get to take part in games, outdoor activities (such as camping, bushwalking and sailing), craft activities, environmental activities (where they can learn about nature, native birds and native animals) and acting / presenting.

Where to from here? All you need to do is contact us. Don’t delay, what are you waiting for!!

Joey Uniform & Award Scheme

As part of the world wide Scout movement Joey Scouts have their own uniform.

The uniform may be worn before the Joey Scout is “invested” or becomes a member, but the scarf and woggle will only be presented to them at their investiture ceremony and cannot be worn until then.

Appropriate footwear also is also needed. Sneakers, sand shoes or other closed toed shoes are good. Bare feet, thongs or crocs are not allowed.

Joey Scouts are “Sun Smart” and need to wear a broad rimmed hat or something similar when participating in any outdoor activities.

For most meetings at Oakgrove Community Center and excursions the uniform will be worn. Your Joey section leader will let you know if there are activities, such as one where you might get dirty, where you will wear casual clothes.

Joey Badge Placement

All badges need to be sewn onto the Joey Scouts shirt in specific locations. The diagram below shows the correct placement.

Joey Participation Scheme

Joey Scouts have a series of challenges aimed at the age group to allow Joey Scouts to strive to earn a badge in a fun, and achievable way. Each of these challenges can be done with their Mob and some of the challenges have sections that you might like to do with your Joey as a family. Speak to your Joey Scout Leader about how your Joey can begin the first challenge!

Care and Share Challenge

Each Mob plans and runs programs for one month that focus on caring and sharing. As a highlight, the Mob does a special deed for the local community.

Buddy Mob Challenge

Joey Scout Mobs visit each other, share activities and have great fun. The Mob Buddy Scheme aims at building a rapport and friendship between different Mobs.

Environment Challenge

The Mob undertakes four simple Environmental Challenges that aim to develop an appreciation of and respect for the natural environment, to gain knowledge of Australian plants and animals, and to develop a sense of responsibility in behaviour and action.

Adventure Challenge

The Adventure Challenge is designed to broaden each Joey Scout’s life experiences through visiting places to which the Mob doesn’t usually go. Some of the adventures could include a trip to the beach or a creek, a bushwalk, visiting a museum or a farm… the possibilities are endless!

Promise Challenge

The aim of this challenge is to allow older Joey Scouts to gain a greater understanding of the Scout Promise and Law, to learn about Scouting’s Founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell, and to discover the history of Scouting. The challenge requires the Joey Scout to complete certain elements, such as research and discussion with their parents and Leaders, away from the Mob meetings. The Joey will also be required to give a presentation to the Mob on completion of the task.
